The history of pantyhose, as for stockings, is tied to that of changes in styles of women's hemlines. Before the 1920s, it was generally expected that women would cover their legs in public, including their ankles; and dress and skirt hemlines were generally to the ground. The main exceptions were in sports and entertainment. In the 1920s, fashionable hemlines for women began to rise, exposing the legs to just below the knees. Stockings also came into vogue to maintain leg coverage, as well as some level of warmth. The most popular stockings were sheer hosiery which were first made of silk or rayon (then known as "artificial silk"), and after 1940 of nylon, which had been invented by DuPont in 1938. During the 1940s and 1950s, stage and film producers would sew stockings to the briefs of their actresses and dancers, as testified to by singer-actress-dancer Ann Miller.[3][4] These garments were seen in popular motion pictures such as Daddy Long Legs.
The origin of the term G-string is obscure. It may simply stand for 'Gusset' as the G-String is in effect just a gusset on a string. Since the 19th century, the term geestring referred to the string which held the loincloth of American Indians[21] and later referred to the narrow loincloth itself. William Safire in his Ode on a G-String quoted the usage of the word G-string for loincloth by Harper's Magazine 15 years after Beadle's and suggested that the magazine confused the word with the musical term G string (i.e., the string for the G note). Safire also mentions the opinion of linguist Robert Hendrickson that "G" (or "gee") stands for groin, which was a taboo word at the time.[22]

Up until this time, there was little reason for women outside show business to wear "panty hose", as the longer hemlines allowed for the use of over-the-knee stockings secured with a garter belt. Nonetheless, during the 1960s, improved textile manufacturing processes made pantyhose increasingly more affordable, while man-made textiles such as spandex (or elastane) made them more comfortable and durable. The advent of the fashionable miniskirt, which exposed the legs to well above the knee, made pantyhose a necessity to many women. In 1970, U.S. sales of pantyhose exceeded stockings for the first time, and it has remained so ever since.[8] Pantyhose became a wardrobe staple throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

One type of thong is the G-string, the back of which consists only of a (typically elasticized) string.[2] The two terms G-string and thong are often used interchangeably; however, they can refer to distinct pieces of clothing. Thongs come in a variety of styles depending on the thickness, material or type of the rear portion of fabric and are available for both men and women throughout most of the world.

Lisa Buhler, founder of Lisa Says Gah, told us that she’s a big fan of Swiss lingerie brand Hanro for its “luxe fabrics and classic designs.” (The brand also came up when we talked to some cool and stylish women about their favorite bathrobes.) If the price of the Hanro bikini is a little steep, Buhler suggests Everlane’s underwear, which she says has a similar design to Hanro at a fraction of the price.
First, the lost star is only due to the thong part no being long/stretchy enough. This did an excellent of smoothing out my tummy and back beneath my bra. I am please with how comfortable it is; but it is still shapewear, so I know I'm wearing it. The silicone was easily adjustable and did a great job of staying in place. If you will be mostly doing one thing - sitting, walking, standing etc - then this is a great smoothing option. However, if you'll be switching positions a lot, then the thong may become uncomfortable. I wore this at work (mostly sitting) and on a Sunday afternoon nature walk (mostly walking) and was perfectly comfortable. Unfortunately, a date night that involved standing at a bar, sitting at dinner, then standing and sitting at a party was not so pleasant because the thong would ride up whenever I moved. It is a good option if you're looking for a midsection smoother without pantylines.

“A good high-waisted moment can make your butt look like it’s starring in its own ’90s Calvin Klein commercial,” according to former Strategist writer and current Self editor Lori Keong, who says this high-rise Everlane pair will do the trick. “These slide right up to your navel, hug but don’t squeeze your midrange, and don’t lose their shape or bunch up around your hips during the day,” she says. “They flatter your waist and hug your curves, but don’t pinch at the waistline like other elastic briefs or ride up.” They pass the VPL test, too. “You’d have to be really squinting to detect any VPL,” Keong says.

Thongs were initially thought to be uncomfortable by the masses because when a woman went to put it on, she pulled it up as if she were putting on a brief. Thongs were designed to rest on the hips. So, naturally, women sensed the discomfort of the thong being too high in the crotch. However, most thong manufacturers have jumped on the band wagon and lengthened the rise of thongs. Eventually, most women came back, tried on a thong again, and found them more comfortable. Today, with low-rise pants on the market, thongs come in both high-rise and low-rise styles.
Hi, reader in the U.S., it seems you use Wikipedia a lot! This is the 2nd appeal we've shown you. It's awkward, but this Tuesday we humbly ask for your help. To find the best kinds of women’s underwear, we reached out to 26 stylish businesswomen, models, designers, and musicians to get their favorites. And to ensure we left no pairs behind, we also culled our archives for underwear recommended by other interesting people (Amber Rose and Barbara Corcoran, to name two). Read on for all of their picks, which include practical underwear that will get you through the workday without a wedgie, pairs that will be invisible under even the slinkiest dresses, and a few styles that you’ll probably want to show off.
First discovered these bras years ago, and I wouldn't wear anything else. They are beautifully made, fit me perfectly, launder well and are comfortable. Love the ease of a front close and the wires never dig. I've always had a problem with straps slipping down until I found Strap-Mates. I have them on all of my bras and this handy, inconspicuous little item is truly a life-saver.

Avoid wearing thongs when you’re sick. If you’ve decided thongs are your go-to underwear for daily wear, don’t toss out all your other panties just yet![5] When you’re sick, typically with diarrhea or food poisoning, you won’t want to be wearing a thong. This can spread germs and fecal matter (definitely not cool), and be a bit more uncomfortable when your nether-regions are feeling sensitive. You may want to avoid thongs on your period as well, as the blood and discharge will spread easier on a thong than in bikini bottoms.
It might be awkward, but this is our last chance, so please don't scroll past this. This Tuesday we humbly ask you to defend Wikipedia's independence. Former Strategist writer and editor Margaret Rhodes wrote an ode to these high-rise briefs, which she says are like “a warm embrace,” and akin to curling up with a hot-water bottle or a puppy. Part of the Elance’s magic, according to Rhodes, is that “unlike the chic — even slightly sexy — grandma-esque briefs from lines like Araks and Baserange, the plain cotton Elance leaves pretty much everything to the imagination. You don’t wear these undergarments — they wear you. More exactly, they swaddle you.”
A dance belt is a type of thong designed to be used in the same manner as an athletic supporter, but for male dancers (especially in ballet).[27] Its purpose is to protect and support the dancer during dance activities without being seen through outer garments, such as tights, leotards, gym leggings or shorts. Thongs tend to offer better support for the male anatomy than do other underwear styles (as well as eliminating contact between the genitals and inner thighs) and is one of the reasons why men and boys may choose to wear them.[28]

Avoid wearing thongs every day. For the same reason that you should change your thong on a regular basis, you should avoid wearing your thong every day. Bacteria can easily travel up the fabric of the thong, which means wearing one every day can make you more prone to infections. Try wearing thongs only during the day or times when they are a needed fashion piece. Wear full-coverage panties at night, when you work out, and when you are wearing heavy jeans or other bottoms which won’t show your panty line.
